The Clangers in Clay: Eggbot

I hope you've been enjoying my series on how to make miniatures based on the TV series the Clangers. As a fan of a certain age who enjoyed the original series, most of the items I'm making are those that have featured in both the old and the new series. However, I was really taken by the Eggbot characters which featured in an episode of the new series, so today I'm showing you how to make the littlest Eggbot.
Please remember that this is an ornament for nostalgic adults or older children - it's not a toy as it has small and breakable parts. If you did want to make it for a young child's room, I'd recommend gluing the pieces together and mounting the scene in a box frame which could hang on the wall.

All you'll need to make the Eggbot is polymer clay (e.g. Fimo or Sculpey) in:
  • Red
  • Black

It's also helpful to have a textured surface to roll the clay on, a small paintbrush handle, and some gloss varnish.

1. Roll a ball of red clay of the size you want your Eggbot to be.

2. Roll the ball thinner at one end to make an egg shape. If you want to give the Eggbot a textured appearance, roll it on a texture plate or any textured surface. I think clean sandpaper would work well for this.

3. Use the handle of a small paintbrush to make an indentation for the eye.

4. Roll small balls of black and red clay, about the same size as the indentation.

5. Use the paintbrush handle to make an indentation in the red one, and apply it to the hole on the Eggbot.

6. Place the black ball of clay onto the red one.

7. Bake.

8. If you've got varnish, use this to make the Eggbot's eye shiny.

Hello. I live in Northeast Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and my nephews are fans of the revised Clangers show. They very much liked the episode with the Eggbots. Found your page via images on the Bing website doing a search for Clangers toys eggbot. Have a nice day. Bye.
